Gesine Judithe Grieg, født Hagerup 1814-1875
Mother of composer Edvard Grieg.
Gesine Judithe Hagerup was a music teacher and daughter of solicitor and politician Edvard Hagerup. Gesine was musically gifted and studied with the German composer Albert Methfessel. In Bergen, she performed as a pianist and accompanist. She also wrote poems and plays and arranged weekly musical events. Her husband, Alexander Grieg, was a successful merchant and a British vice-consul. She and Alexander were the parents of the composer Edvard Grieg.
Gesine was born 18 January 1814 at Bergen, the daughter of Edvard Hagerup and Ingeborg Benedicte Janson. She was baptized in March of the same year at Domkirken in Bergen.
On 8 November 1836, Gesine married Alexander Grieg at Domkirken in Bergen. He was 30 years of age and she was 22 when they married. They were the parents of five children: Maren, Benedict, John, Edvard and Elizabeth.
At the time of the 1865 Norway Census, the Grieg family was living in Bergen. Included in the household were Alexander, working as a merchant, Gesine, their children, Maren, Benedict, John, Edvard and Elizabeth. Also living in the household were two servants: Marthe Monsen and Elisabet Iversen.
Gesine died 23 October 1875 in Bergen at the age of 61 3/4 years. Her remains were interred on 28 October 1875.
